The author of this text is Dr. Sun Yang, the founder of Corliber, an alumnus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a key member of the Shenzhen Jiao Tong University Alumni Football Team. He is a passionate football enthusiast.
The initial acquaintance with "Corliber"
In May 2019, a few months after my first reconstructive surgery for the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in my left knee, I attended an alumni event. It was during this event that I had a conversation with Dr. Sun about my knee ligament issues and his entrepreneurial project— the regenerative interface screw.
At that time, the project was in the small animal experimentation phase and had already shown significant results. This excellent product, a pioneer in the field of regenerative medicine in China, had limited usage abroad. Since I had already undergone my surgery and couldn't be a test subject again, I had to give up on further participation. However, this product left a profound impression on me. I couldn't help but reflect on how many outstanding doctoral graduates, like Dr. Sun Yang, were returning from overseas to lead innovative projects. From a medical perspective, it seemed like the dawn of domestically-produced medical products replacing foreign ones was approaching.
"Yeah, it should be fine."…
I shared my dilemma with Dr. Sun, and he told me that Corliber regenerative interface screw is expected to obtain approval from the National Medical Products Administration by the end of the year. Once approved, it can be used in domestic hospitals. When the pandemic is over, arrangements can be made for an authoritative expert in this field to perform surgery on me.
Believing in the Power of Corliber
In March 2023, with the end of the pandemic, I finally caught up with Corliber leading the way. I was invited to a consultation with experts including Professor Zhao Jinzhong from Shanghai No. 6 Hospital and Professor Guo Lin from the Southwest Hospital of the Army Medical University in Chongqing. The educational surgery, where Professor Guo Lin would be performing the operation, marked my third time lying on the operating table. Finally, I would be able to use Corliber's regenerative interface screws. On March 29th, I drove for a day and a night to reach Enshi, Hubei.
On the evening of March 30th, I arrived at the Enshi State Central Hospital, a local tertiary hospital. Colleagues from Corliber and Director Li Lei from the Orthopedic Surgery Department had already registered my information, and I was admitted directly to the hospital.
On March 31st, I underwent blood tests and several preoperative examinations, including ultrasound. Despite having experienced two ACL surgeries, I still harbored some fears about the third surgery. For instance, having already harvested autograft ligaments in the previous two surgeries, I wondered if there were enough ligaments left for this time. Questions about the recovery of strength after harvesting ligaments and the recommendation from Professor Guo Lin to prepare 6 meniscal sutures added to my concerns. In the second surgery, I had three stitches for meniscal repair, and now, despite less severe damage, I needed 6 meniscal sutures. Could the surgery be done without general anesthesia? Could a urinary catheter be avoided? Dr. Sun answered these questions in detail before the surgery, alleviating my concerns. On April 1st, Professor Guo Lin flew in from Xi'an, conducted additional checks and communication before the surgery, once again dispelling my worries.
At around 3 p.m., the surgery began, and it was a live broadcast, an educational operation streamed across the internet. In the first few minutes after the intravenous anesthesia entered my body, I saw Dr. Sun waving at me from the operating room, familiar faces around me. With confidence, I drifted off to sleep.
Four hours later, the surgery was completed, and I gradually woke up from a deep sleep. Dr. Sun promptly sent me a message informing me about the details of the operation.
On the second day after the surgery, Dr. Sun came to the ward to visit me, and we happily took a photo together to commemorate the moment.
